Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest protected area, spans 3,893 square kilometres in the northwestern region of the country. Established in 1952, this park is named after the iconic Murchison Falls, where the Nile River explodes through a narrow gorge only 7 meters wide, dropping 45 meters into a powerful surge of white water. The park boasts a rich variety of wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and Uganda’s largest population of crocodiles. As a crucial part of Uganda’s tourism industry, Murchison Falls National Park is a diverse destination that blends adventure, wildlife, and stunning scenery.

Nature and Vegetation

Murchison Falls National Park’s landscape is composed of several distinct habitats, which include savannah grasslands, riverine woodlands, and dense tropical forests. The southern part of the park is largely covered by Borassus palm trees, acacia trees, and open savannah, while the northern region features extensive grasslands. The park’s rich vegetation is sustained by the Victoria Nile, creating a lush green environment in some parts and supporting abundant wildlife. Forests like Rabongo and Kaniyo Pabidi offer a sanctuary for primates, making the park ecologically diverse and scenic throughout the year.

Unique Features

The park is renowned for its dramatic waterfall and the abundant wildlife that calls the surrounding savannahs, forests, and wetlands home. Murchison Falls itself is a striking natural feature, where the Nile river narrows into a powerful stream that drops into the Devil’s Cauldron. The park also offers excellent opportunities to see the Big Four (elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes), and nearby Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary completes the Big Five safari experience with rhino tracking. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, hosting over 450 bird species, including the rare and majestic shoebill stork, commonly spotted in the wetlands.
